In between the desert sand and starless sky you'll find me
Searching for a place to land and lights that do not blind me
I used to live alone now I can't escape the crowd
And every night I go out looking for the middle ground
In between the harvest and the day the fruit goes rotten
Kiss the girls with idle hands see what the devil's taught them
Maybe it's a curse or maybe it's a crown
Either way I'll wear it proudly looking for the middle ground
I just want a level head
A level heart and a level bed
I'm tired of the sloping floors
They always seem to point me towards

In between the golden age and grand decline I wonder
How we miss the good old days until they've been outnumbered
I used to be so shy but now I am too proud
Take me as I am I'm looking for the middle ground
In between Thoreau and Thynne she was like a sailor
Disappointed by the wind that never seemed to trail her
I used to love her voice now I cannot take the sound
